Rita Mae Long, age 87, of Fort Recovery, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday. June 11, 2026 at St. Rita's Hospital.
She was born on August 24, 1938 in Patton, Pennsylvania, to the late Paul and Mary (Shannon) Long.
In addition to her parents, Rita is preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry L. Long, whom she married on June 20, 1959, and who passed away on December 21, 2023; her sons, David Long and Curt "Pup" Long; her grandson, Shane Long; and six siblings.
Rita is survived by her children, Mark (Sharon) Long of Fort Recovery, and Pamela (Russ) Hancock of Greensburg, Indiana; grandchildren, Justin (Kelly) Pruitt of Indianapolis, and Kelly Long of Fort Recovery; her great grandchildren, Nora and Charley; and three siblings.
Rita enjoyed sewing, tending to her flower gardens, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and taking bus day trips with a special group of friends. She was a remarkably resourceful woman who was never afraid to tackle a project or learn something new. Whether it was fixing something around the house, helping a family member, or lending a hand to a friend, Rita approached every task with determination and confidence. She was always willing to help others but never sought recognition or praise for her efforts. Her selfless nature, strong work ethic, and independent spirit were qualities admired by all who knew her. Above all, Rita cherished the time she spent with her family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Recovery.
Guests may visit with Rita's family on Sunday, June 14, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM and again on Monday from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at Brockman Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you honor Rita's memory in a way that reflects her kind and giving spirit. Consider planting a tree, flower, or garden plant in a where others may enjoy its beauty. You may also choose to pay a kindness forward by purchasing a coffee or meal for someone in need, leaving a extra-generous tip for a server, or baking cookies, a cake, or another treat to share with someone and brighten their day, or donate to your favorite charity. Through these simply acts of kindness, Rita's legacy of love and generosity will continue to touch the lives of others.
