Mary Kathryn Heiby, age 99, of rural Portland, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Persimmon Ridge Rehab Center in Portland.
She was born on December 14, 1926, in Mercer County, Ohio, to the late Dwight Edwin and Mary Elise (Jones) Whitacre.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, David Frederick Heiby, whom she married on October 20, 1946 and who passed away in September 19, 1999; her siblings, Anna (Otis) Marsh, Phyllis (Doug) Williams, Grace (Bob) Garner, and Wilma (Harold) Nash; and her infant son, David Andrew Heiby, who passed in 1951.
Mary will be missed by her children, Fred (Judy) Heiby of Fremont, Indiana, Ted (Catherine) Heiby of Indianapolis, Indiana, Gayle (John) Podczerwinski of Madison, Indiana, and Sara (David) Rhodehamel of Portland, Indiana; her grandchildren, Emmy (Andrew) Butler, Anne O'Donnell, Rachel (Brian) Stewart, Jared (Amy) Heiby, Elizabeth Dove, Lily Podczerwinski (Tom Workman), and Matthew Podczerwinski; and her great grandchildren, Calvin, Stella, Declan, Liam, Joseph, Finn, Isla, Ronan, Ethan, Cassandra, Alessandra, Tristan, and Anastasia.
Mary was a 1944 graduate of Portland High School. She dedicated her life to her family and was a devoted farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Noble Busy Bee Home Extension Club for 60 years, a member of the Salamonia VFW Auxiliary, and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Recovery. Mary had strong faith, and loved gardening, birds, and reading.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Recovery, with Pastor Ron McCallum officiating. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery.
Guests may visit prior to the service on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM.

Brockman Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery is serving Mary's family.
