John S. Wendel

John S. Wendel, 79, Fort Recovery, Ohio, died October 23, 2014 at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN.
He was born March 15, 1935, in Sharpsburg, OH, to the late Aloys Wendel and the late Armella (Kramer) Wendel. On October 3, 1959, he married Mary Ann (Fiely), who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Pam (Dave) Hicks of Fort Recovery and Joyce (Dan) Wilker of Fort Recovery; two sons, Gary (Margie) Wendel of Fort Recovery and Randy "Otis" Wendel (Leslie Stewart) of Fort Recovery; two brothers, Oliver (Ruth) Wendel of Coldwater, OH and Bob Wendel of New Weston, OH; two sisters, Annie (Willie) Lochtefeld of Fort Recovery and Mary Jean (John) Evers of Fort Recovery; in-laws, Mary Lou Schulze of St. Henry, OH, Irene (Bud) Brussell of New Bremen, OH, Rita (Bob) Boeke of Algonquin, IL, and Marilyn Fiely of St. Henry, OH; a niece with whom they cared for, Wanda (Jon) Fields of New Weston, OH; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, Tom (Lisa) Wendel; and in-laws, Elmer Schulze, Stanley (Theresa) Fiely, Art Fiely, and Rosemary (Leroy) Obringer.
He was formerly employed at the Meiring Poultry Farm in Sharpsburg, Ohio. In 1966 he founded & operated Wendel Poultry Service, Fort Recovery along with his wife, Mary Ann, until his retirement in 1997.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3324, the American Legion Post 345, and the Ohio Progressive Sportmans Club, all of Fort Recovery. He was also a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club and the International and Ohio Edsel Owners Club. He was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery, Ohio and served as a usher. He collected and restored antique cars, enjoyed being at his pond, and playing Yahtzee. He also enjoyed time with his grandchildren and keeping up with the poultry industry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, October 27, 2014 at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery, Fr. Thomas Dorn officiating. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, Fort Recovery.
Calling is 2:00 pm-7:00 pm Sunday and 9:00 am-10:00 am Monday at Brockman - Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery, Ohio.
The American Legion prayer service is 6:45 pm Sunday at the funeral home, followed by a Knights of Columbus prayer service. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the American Legion.
