John W. Muhlenkamp

March 30, 1945 — October 17, 2025

Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Recovery, Ohio

John William Muhlenkamp, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Recovery, Ohio passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at the Lodge Nursing and Rehab Center in Loveland, Ohio.

He was born on March 30, 1945, in Celina, Ohio, the son of the late Otto and Rosalyn (Knapke) Muhlenkamp. On July 27, 1968, he married the love of his life, Evelyn (Gehm) Muhlenkamp who preceded him in death on January 11, 2025.

He is survived by his two children, Maria Beth Borgerding of Cincinnati, and Philip (Laura Nolting) Muhlenkamp of Columbia, South Carolina; his four grandchildren that he would refer to as his greatest blessings: Sophia Borgerding of Brooklyn, New York, John "Jack" Borgerding of Atlanta, Georgia, and Harrison and Nolan Muhlenkamp of Columbia, South Carolina.

John was loved by his many siblings and their families. He is survived by: Dianne (Jim) Schwartz, of Cincinnati, Ted (Judy) Muhlenkamp of Coldwater, Lou (Luke) Brackman of Coldwater, Nick (Joanie) Muhlenkamp of Coldwater, Mariann Pubentz of Cincinnati and Joe (Julie) Muhlenkamp of Fort Recovery as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Elmer and Alta (Walston) Gehm, his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" and Robert "Bob" Meiring, his brother-in-law, Kenneth Pubentz, a niece, Sara Brackman and nephews, Michael Brackman and Daniel Meiring.

John graduated from Coldwater High School in 1963. He began his career in insurance in 1966 at Hein Insurance Agency. Over the years, his role expanded, and in 1984, he and his colleague and longtime family friend, Chuck Hein, purchased the agency from Chuck's father, Charlie Hein, following Charlie's retirement. In 2000, John and Chuck merged their business with the Franke-Meiring Agency, forming the Fort Recovery Insurance Agency, which continues to operate today. John retired from Fort Recovery Insurance Agency in 2007, concluding a rewarding 41-year career in the insurance industry.

The St. Anthony and Fort Recovery areas were home to John for 75 years. While John and Evelyn spent the last five years together in Cincinnati, with their daughter Maria nearby, their love for Fort Recovery never faded. John loved his town, the Fort Recovery community spirit and was often homesick. John and Evelyn would read the Daily Standard faithfully to keep up on local happenings. He enjoyed the letters and cards he received from dear friends and family.

John was a kind, loyal, and generous man. His true love was his family. He had a gentle, endearing love for his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings. He enjoyed their visits and spending time with them. There was nothing he would not do to help them. John was a quiet and reserved man, but when he spoke everyone listened.

John learned at an early age he was Type 1 diabetic. He never let his illness get in his way and lived a fulfilled life with family and friends. In his earlier years, he played in a bowling league. March Madness was his favorite time of year attending high school state basketball games in Columbus with his friends. He was an avid euchre and pinnacle player who could play for hours or at least until he won. He loved watching The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds, and Cincinnati Bengals. Most recently, he was still enjoying the outdoors and watching nature.

Along with Evelyn, they co-chaired the Fort Recovery Bicentennial Ball in 1991. John was a 3rd degree member of the Fort Recovery Knights of Columbus. He was also an active and devout member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery.

A memory box will be available at the church, and the family requests that everyone brings their favorite story or memory of John for them to cherish.
