Irma H. Shumaker

Irma H. Shumaker, age 81, of Fort Recovery, passed away on December 22, 2019 at Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater. She was born January 8, 1938, in Fort Recovery, to the late Sylvester and Hilda (Braun) Ungruhn. On August 14, 1965, she married Jerry Shumaker, who died March 6, 1980.
Surviving are her children, Donald Shumaker of Fort Recovery and Linda and Paulo Silva of Marco Island, FL; a grandson, Nate; and a brother-in-law, George Ellis of Fredericktown, MO.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rose Ann (Frank) Steineman and Dorothy Ellis.
She was a graduate of Coldwater High School, Coldwater, Miami University, Oxford and then received her master's degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
Irma retired after years of working as an elementary school teacher.
She was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery and its Altar Rosary Sodality. Irma was a life member of both the Ohio Education Association (O.E.A) and the National Teachers Association (N.E.A). She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary Post 3025, Coldwater and a social member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6515, Fort Recovery.
Irma loved to stay busy. She could be found passing time in her garden or fishing, bowling with friends or playing Euchre at the library. Over the years, she opened her home and heart to several canine companions and her dog, Pepe, has been by her side for the last 14 years. Irma will be known as a person who lived her life to the fullest and her smile will be missed by so many family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 pm Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery with Fr. Ned Brown as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, Fort Recovery.
Calling is 12:00 pm-1:30 pm Thursday at Brockman - Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery.
